The Cat and the Hat Project

Option #2: Evaluative Essay

In the beginning and in the middle of the story the Cat was dominated by the id. The Cat is dominated by the id because at the beginning of the story the Cat wanted to play games with the Narrator and Sally. The Cat did not consider the Narrator and Sally's opinion and went on to play inside their house. Although the children did not say anything to the Cat the fish did. The Fish did not allow the Cat to be playing in the house; and the Cat ignored his opinions, and kept on playing games. And so the Cat continues to ignore the Fish's command throughout the whole story. When a person plays a game that they enjoy they would most likely have a smile on their face. This same look applys to the Cat. The Cat also has a smile onhis face when he was showing his tricks to the children. This is an example of him showing how he wants to play more games and show more tricks to the children.

In the middle of the story he brought in two things: thing 1 and thing 2. This shows how heis an id because he does not again consider what the children thought along with the Fish. The Cat goes with what he thinks and let thing 1 and 2 run around the children's house making a mess.

At the ending of the story the Cat became an ego. How he became an ego is that the children finally spoke up and told the Cat to leave. He did but came back again to clean up his mess that thing 1 and thing 2 caused.

Persepolis Blog Responses #2

9)
How the kids did this is that they would wear it out publicly and if they got caught they will cry. Sometimes they will buy things and keep it hidden. I think what I would have done is that I would have followed their rules silently. I might buy the things that I want to buy, but would never have the guts to wear it out publicly. As a teen the only place I will act rebellion against the rule is inside of my house. Satrapi is a normal kid in many ways. When she wants someting she will askher parents for money. And when she does not like something she will try and make that something into what she likes.

11)
This family is like any other family who cares for each other. What is important to Marji's parents is her, their only daughter/child. The parents create an environment that will make her learn and an experiencing environment; and at the same time a happy one too. The parents got their strength from their daughter because it is a parent's duty to protect their children and that duty is what make the parents successful in that.

12)
The role of women in the story is that they are kind of like slaves. Women can not do anything without their "masters"/husbands. Since Marji is not married yet she has a little more freedom than her mother. Marji's mother is married and the rules says that, "A women who is married can not go anywhere without her husband accompanying her." So most of the time Marji's mother is in the house all the time. The same situation applies to all the women in her school and neighboors.

2)
No Persepolis is more powerful if Strapi wroted the way it is because it is a true experience from her. And writing from that experience is more powerful than writing from anexperience that you have never had. This is the first memoir I have read so I can not really relate it to other memoirs. The benefits of memoirs is that it gives people a taste of what the author was going through in their life. Another benefit is that her experience can also relate to others who share the same experience. The drawbacks would be that it brings back the pain that she felt when writing this.

5)
For me the writer's voice was appealing, but only in some of the pages. I do not identify with any of Marji's character, but the one character I like the most is that she can stand up for herself and tell/show how she feels about the war and the rules. The one character that I dislike the most is exaggerating too much. No it did not because I have read similar books/comic to Persepolis.

6)
How the revolution exert power and influence over so many people is because the Taliban threaten to punish them if they do not follow the laws(of god). Many people left after the revolution because because of the war and bombing there were no more jobs. And if there were not a lot of jobs the families can not survive; and the products are getting pricey. I think they send Marji off to Australia because they wanted their daughter to have a future and experience many things outside their land. Also, they probably wanted Marji to be known to other people. The parents does not leave because probably they are afraid that they can not support her enough because finding a job is hard. And they probably wanted to stay and lie in their homeland.

Final Project Evaluation

What does your feed contain and why?

My 'feed' contains mainly internet access, virtual stores, ads, music, etc. I choose to have these on my 'feed' because people uses these things.

  • What does this say about and how does this define American culture and identity?

What this says about the culture is that their culture is not very traditional. Unlike some cultures Americans do not have traditional clothings for a specific reason. For example, Japanese. They have a traditional clothing called a Kimono. Kiminos are worn usually during the summer festivals. What this says about American identity is that they like to stand out from the crowd. Even if they are not super stars their clothing and make-up and everything will be the ones making them stand out. How this define American culture is that they believe in something that has a powerful influence on them. This not only goes to the American culture but to many as well. How this define American identity is that they buy anything that looks cool("The power of cool").

  • What are the social implications of technology use, consumerism or anti-consumerism? Are these good, bad? Is it okay to resist?

The social implications oftechnology use is mostly consumerism. Consumerism is both good and bad. It is good because you can get what you wantand help the economy a bit. It is bad because too much people are consumering, and when they consume the big corporations are getting bigger, and the bigger they get the more taxes are cut off. It is okay to resist beacuse not all peoplelike they idea of consumerism very much.

  • How does media, consumerism, reliance on technology, and/or popular culture personally affect you? Do they mold us, or us them?

How media affects me is that I really love to listen to music, using the web, and watching movies. Consumerism affects me by it's products produce. The way reliance on technology affects me is that it is easier to use technology to do something for us instead of doing it ourselves. For example, the pow. We do not have to use knives to cut the grasses anymore, instead the pow takes over for us. How popular culture affects me is by their clothing and accessories they have on their heads. It is also their wonder designs on the clothing and accessories that affects me. It is kind of like both. We mod them and in return they mod us.

  • How does it impacts you? Define you? What does it say about your personal habits, your individuality?

How it impacts me is how people would spend so much money on unneccessary things just to make them look good. For example earings. People can just wear one or two sets of earings, but no they buy so many pair. How this defines me is that I do not buy alot of accessories. I just want to buy but do not actually buy it. What it says about my personal habit is that I try not to use my money or parent's money on accessory. An example of this would be nail polish. During spring break I went to the store and bought my first nail polish. Ofcoruse there were many that I also bought with, but that was my first time; in my 16 years of life; that I ever bought make-up. What this says about my indivuduality is that I can not go shopping by myself yet.

  • If there is a moral to the story, what is it? How does Andeson convey this moral?

If there is a moral to the story it wouvd be that peolpe who uses the feed gets the lesions on their bodies. How he does it is that he makes the characters and everyone else in the book sound like the lesions are not so bad; when literally their skins are falling off.

  • Are people anything without the feed , in the world of the story?

No the people are nothing without the feed. They are nothing because they are so used to the feed when they were small that they do not know what to do without the feed. The feed is like a controler or a chip that once it is dead or not working, the whole system stops working.

  • Why does Titus order all those pants inthe second-to-last chapter?

Titus ordered the pants because something happened to his pants that is the same. Also he was frustrated by the things happening to Violet he did not know what to do.

  • What does the feed interlude at the end of the book mean (Everything must go...)?

The feedinterludes "everything must go..." I think this means that the feed does not want the people to know what they are doing to them. And so everything must move on. They are not waiting for people to know and catch up to them.

Blog 3: Visual Essay

Issue: CONSUMERISM

  • How do the images tell a story, represent your theme?

The images I selected does not really tell a story, except for the picture at the far right. The pictures I have represent my theme because it has the words consumer on it and words that are related to it.

  • What's your message? What do the pictures say?

My message is that "lOOK AT WHAT YOU DO MY CONUMERISM FRIENDS". The pictures just tell about consumerism. That people consume, and consume.

  • Why did you choose the images you did? What are their importance, implications, and influence?

I choose the images I did because these images tells a lot about consumerism just looking at it. You can also tell right away what the theme is about. The importance is that these pictures tell what weare doing and who we are to the economic world. The pictures are suggesting that we, the people, should consume more. Even the things that are not really necessary. It's influences are the modelers, expense, brand, etc.

  • What are the applications or use of, understanding and values of some combination of the text themes that you have developed and/or experienced over your lifetime?

What I have understand about consumerism when I was little was that if I want to buy something it has to be something that both of my parents thinks is necessary for me. For example, clothings. Whenever I went with my mom to buy clothes for me she always go for the medium size, 14 or 16 size. It is always a big size that will be loosed on me. Since my mother keeps telling me that bigger size is better for me; because it saves money; I got into a habit of buy medium size clothes. So whenever I shop I will always go for the medium sized shirt.

  • How have you developed these?

My parents, especially my mother was the one who influenced me the most.

  • What are your feelings about them?

My feelings is then was that I was not really happy getting "M"size shirts. Now, I am very grateful to my mom because I have grown somewhat and the "M" sized shirt thing really helped.

Blog Prompt 2

  • How does having the "feed" affect Titus' personality and intelligence? What passages demonstrate this?

The feeds just tell/ advertise things to him to buy stuff that he will be interested in. His personality is not very much affected by the feed, but his intelligence is seriously AFFECTED by the feed. For example, when Titus, his friends, and Violet were all in a cell. Violet told Titus about the dead languages and Titus did not have one clue what it is. Also when Violet took out a piece of paper and a pen from her bag Titus looked at her weird. And he said that he can read a little, but protested in School(TM). This example from the book show how not intelligence Titus is without the feed.

  • Respond to page 97. Relate this to marketing tactics in today's society. What is your "type?" What ads would you get if you had a "feed?" How often would you chat? How would chatting affect modern day communication?

Business people also use commercials to get consumerism to buy their products. Basically, the same tactics is used to make people buy products.

My types would just be manga books, clothing, electronics, art materials, and cleaning materials.

The ads that I would probably get are book store ads, clothing and electronic ads, and cleaning ads.

If I had a feed I would not chat a lot. Probably, about 20 minutes to one hour per five days.

How chatting affects modern day communication is that there would be not a lot of noises. When they chat next to each other it seems as if there is a very long silence between them. like they have nothing else to do besides sitting. If it is a far away chatting people do not know what the other person's, who they are chatting to, emotions and facial expression would look like. Chatting would totally change the way people talk with one another.

  • "Now that School(TM) is run by the corporations, it's pretty brag, because it teaches us how the world can be used, like mainly how to use our feeds" (p.90). In what ways does school and society teach us how to use the world? Why is consumer culture so strong? Why is it beneficial for companies to teach people how to consume? How is it dangerous?

School and society teaches us how we are going to hold the economy together.School teaches us how to go to college and find a suitable job for ourselves. Society gives us experiences.

consumer culture is strong because most people are easily influenced by the commercial ads.

It is beneficial because they will have money to pay their workers and enough money to produce some more products.

It is dangerous because not all the products that are produced help the economy.

Blog prompt 1

  • What do you notice about the language Anderson uses? What is his purpose for doing so? How is it effective?

What I notice about the language Anderson uses is that it sounds very blondy-like. I also notice that the characters keep saying, the words, "null, unit, dadada, meg, mal, and like" when they speak. I think his purpose for doing so is that in this book new and improved technology are used, so why not use words that people rarely speak. It is effective because as of now not many people uses those short words when talking, except for like and probably null. I was very surprised when I was reading those words over and over.

  • In what ways does this Spring Break compare with what you envision when you think of Spring Break?

I think that this spring break that Titus and his friends are having is totally not a spring break at all. Sure people wants something fun to do over the break, but going to the moon is way out of the league. When I think of spring break I think of sunny, cold, windy, and warm. For me, spring break is the time to clean my house and be lazy. Both of our way to spend spring break is very different from one another. Titus and his friends spend their time and money on the moon, while I work hard and be lazy.

  • What are the science fiction elements on this novel. Why is it categorized as sci fi?

The science fiction elements are the feed chips, going to the moon in an upcar, being able to m-chatting with one another. It is categorized as sci fi because the scientific technology that the book have can not be invented and made into real life.

My Memories

Do you remember the first time you start to remember things around you?
Like for example, you do not remember everything from when you were born.
And then, all of a sudden you just see and know and remember things around you.
Don't you find that kind of weird?
And mysterious?
Going on, my first time remembering my life so far is skipping down the stairs and running into the living room.
I was small, and I don't know how old I was.
I believe I went upstairs to get something....and was happy?
And......CUT!!!!
That was my first time I remembered about my life.
Weird that it is still stuck in my head for almost 16 years.
The image is kind of fuzzy but I can still make it out.
I think I was wearing a pink shirt and had short hair.
So...I was wondering, when my little brother, who's 3 years old, grows older what will he remember first?

Space

You know, sometimes I wonder what is space?
I do not mean space as in "I need space."
I meant the space that is beyond Earth.
Outer space, yeah, that's what I meant.
Anyways, what is it again?
Besides just being spacious, dark, gloomy, scary and twinkling with those meteor rocks; in this case, stars.
And I certainly do not want the scientific definition of space.
What I am thingking about is that, why is it there?
What's its purpose?
I mean we are living in something that's (might be) living that's bigger than us, and exsists in something that is bigger than itself.
To make it more simpler: we live on or in Earth, Earth lives/ exsists in space, so where does space exsist?
And so I was thingking...maybe space is creating itself.
For example, there is a sheet of white paper.
It is totally blank and somehow it turned black all of a sudden.
No one spilled any ink on it or colored it.
It did it itself (magic).
Understand where I am getting at?
So I am comparing space to a piece of white paper that can turn it self dark.
Comprendo?

When it rains...

When it rains I get tired.
When it rains I get lazy.
When it rains outside is always dark and gloomy.
When it rains everything is wet and muggy.
When it rains water keeps falling "drip, drip, drip."
When it rains finding shelter is what we always do.
When it rains it smells like fresh water.
When it rains I do not want to get mysef wet.
When it rains it is always cold.
When it rains it is only during the spring and summer time.
When it rains I stare outside my window waiting for it to stop.
When it rains I know the sun is going to come out.
When it rains it just rains.
